About Me: The Gal behind Meliss Meets World

How this Midwest girl ended up in London and started sharing it!

Hey all! My name is Melissa, but everyone calls me Meliss. A little more about me, I’m originally from the States. My husband and I moved to London from Boston at the end of 2022. My husband and I actually grew up in the Midwest in Wisconsin. We both grew up in small towns and had big dreams to ‘move to the city’ after we were married. Shortly after getting engaged we actually went ‘city shopping’ traveling to New York City, Boston, and Washington DC. We absolutely fell in love with Boston and decided to move six months after we were married to start a new life together.

We made a vow when we were married to explore what the world has to offer by means of traveling. Even though my husband had traveled the world a bit while studying abroad, I had never left the country before getting married. Being the eldest of six girls I was fortunate to spend many trips to Disney World and around the country, but never across the world!

We moved to Boston!

After moving from the Midwest to Boston, we didn’t waste any time booking our first international trip together (excluding our honeymoon in St. Lucia). We headed to London and Paris six months after we moved to Boston, and once we started traveling, we didn’t want to stop. We started to advance in our respective careers, I as a nurse and my husband as an architect, and took full advantage of our yearly vacation allowances to travel the world.

Even though we had full-time careers, we still found time to pursue our true passion, which was traveling. We explored the beauty of Boston and New England on weekends, especially the mountains of New England in the fall and winter, and the incredible beaches in the summer. We planned two or three international trips a year using our paid vacation time. I didn’t even start documenting our travels through Instagram until I moved to Boston, and have now been documenting everything and anything along the way to share with all of you here on MelissMeetsWorld!

We moved to London!

Even though I grew up in the Midwest, I will always consider Boston and New England my home. It really is the perfect mix between American and European culture and one of the most beautiful places in America. Living in Boston allowed us to explore New England and all of its states, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. After living in Boston for eight years exploring as much as we could, we were ready for our next challenge.

That next challenge would come in the form of a move abroad. We figured if we moved out of a small Midwestern town to Boston on our own, we could do the same in another country! The pandemic was a curse and a blessing, as it allowed us the time to research our move abroad. It also taught us how important the move abroad was for us; if we didn’t make the move then we might never will.

So there you have it, even though I share my love of Boston and New England here on MelissMeetsWorld.com, living in London has also allowed us to see more of the world, which I also love to share as well. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to explore the beauty of the United Kingdom and the European continent, even when living abroad isn’t always easy! Planning a trip can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be! We still both work full time in London but always plan with a mix of budget-friendly and splurge-worthy ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ luxuries as well. I hope our experiences can help you plan your next trip or even inspire just a bit of wanderlust!

5 things you NEED to know before visiting 🇮🇹 5 things you NEED to know before visiting 🇮🇹Positano

👧🏼Hi! I’m Melissa and I work as a luxury travel advisor in London. I can also help plan your entire Positano or Italy trip, feel free to message me!

1. Where you stay in Positano is really important, we loved our stay at @casalbertina_positano . It wasn’t too far along along the main road, since the farther you go among the main road the higher you’ll be climbing away from the town and beach.

2. This is why you should try to only bring a carry on if you can. You can pay for a luggage porter service when you arrive on the ferry. It was around €30/40 per bag when we visited.

3. Positano is expensive but you’ll want to splurge on a sunset boat ride. We took one with @bluestarpositano and it’s been one of our favorite memories of all of our Italy travels.

4. Book restaurant reservations ahead of time, most places have great views, the farthest from town you are the better and more reasonably priced they’ll be. We had dinner at the famous @lesirenuse …but choose to dine at the outdoor restaurant Aldo’s versus their indoor restaurant!

5. Take ferries between Amalfi coast towns. The buses are a nightmare and taxis are very expensive, you’ll thank me later!

Here’s the weekly recap from our trip to Cornwal Here’s the weekly recap from our trip to Cornwall, and a quick itinerary for you!

📍Take a 🏄‍♂️surf lesson in Newquay

📍Enjoy hydrangea heaven and the beautiful coastline at 🪴Trebah Garden (this was the most beautiful place we visited in Cornwall!)

📍Enjoy dinner at 🍽️MINE in Falmouth and admire the harbor

📍Visit 🏰St Michael’s Mount before heading to St Ives

📍Take the train from 🚊St Erth Station to St Ives, you don’t need more than half a day to see the town

📍Wander around 🚤Mevagissey harbor, this was one of the most beautiful harbors I thought we saw in Cornwall, the famous Lost Gardens of Heligan are close by

📍Visit the unique 🌿Eden Project

📍Find the wild horses in Dartmoor National Park

*Not pictured- Spend a few hours touring Tintagel Castle that’s associated with the legends of King Arthur. The area is massive and you can spend as little or as much time as you want!

*We also had a fabulous meal at the Longstore in Charlestown, which is close to Mevagissey. It’s a smaller harbor than ‘Meva’ but we chose to stay in Meva and this worked out really well for us. I would not recommend staying in St Ives as it’s expensive and not worth it, stay in an area somewhat close or central to all the places you want to visit.

‼️Want to know why I wouldn’t visit Capri ag ‼️Want to know why I wouldn’t visit Capri again, especially on a budget?!

➡️Even though I know this is an unpopular, this is just my opinion, but I would love to hear your thoughts!

🇮🇹If you’re looking to plan a trip to Capri and want to have an unforgettable trip it really is such a beautiful, luxurious destination! Feel free to message me and we’ll chat, I can offer you plenty of VIP perks with incredible properties there!

Let’s start from the beginning, even though this island is fairly easy to take a ferry too, it’s not very easy to move around the island or explore it once you’re there.

We opted to stay in a little bed and breakfast at the end of September (honestly the best part of our trip) that was close to the ferry port, but far enough away so it was quiet. It was a little less than a mile uphill, but we managed fine with our luggage and didn’t hire an expensive taxi (that’s why we brought only carry ons!)

Even though Capri is beautiful, it’s very hard to get around with public transport (if you’re opting for a more budget friendly trip).

To get from the ferry port to Capri Town you need to take the funicular, which when busy you could be queueing for a while.

To transfer between Capri Town and Capri Beach you need to take a bus (taxis aren’t always easy to come by). Since the buses are small you’ll also be queueing for a while, and have to wait for multiple buses.

Because Capri Beach and Capri Town are not close to each other, you’re unable to walk between the two. The two beaches we tried to visit were very small and crowded.

Beach clubs would be the better option, however you need to book reservations in advance and most are quite expensive.

If you’re staying in one spot on Capri or can afford to taxi everywhere I could how the trip would be different, but it’s just really hard to go anywhere on the island.

Since the island is quite small, it’s hard to do a last minute trip here as you need to book accommodations months in advance.

🏝️Have you been to Capri? What was your experience?!
