The most luxurious Positano: My #1 recommendation for staying on the Amalfi Coast (3-4 nights)
Best Places to Stay in Positano
5 Star Hotels
Le Sirenuse • Il San Pietro di Positano • Hotel Villa Franca • Villa Treville • Covo Dei Saraceni
4 Star Hotels
Hotel Poseidon • Villa Fiorentino • Hotel Montemare • Hotel Punta Regina
Pros of staying in Positano
The best area to stay on the Amalfi Coast is Positano because of its iconic coastline views, luxury accommodations, and picturesque winding streets that all lead to a lovely beachfront. You’ll find plenty of boutique shops, and delicious restaurants. It’s also only forty minutes by ferry to the famous island of Capri. I would advise spending at least 3-4 nights in Positano.
Cons of staying in Positano
This is one of the most iconic destinations on the Amalfi Coast so it can get extremely busy during the day because of day-trippers. If you’re not enjoying your hotel pool or heading out on the boat, make sure to reserve a spot at a beach club like La Scogliera. This Positano beach club is right off the main beach and offers more privacy.

Best Luxury Hotels in Capri (2 nights)
5 Star Hotels
Capri Tiberio Palace – The Leading Hotels of the World • J.K. Place Capri Hotel La Palma • Hotel Punta Tragara • Hotel Caesar Augustus • Jumeirah Capri Palace
4 Star Hotels
Relais Maresca • La Residenza • Sina Flora • Hotel La Floridiana
Hotel La Floridiana is highly rated and in October you can find rates for less than $300 per night!
Pros of staying in Capri
Capri is famous for its Blue Grotto and the Faraglioni rock formations. It’s also famous for its upscale aesthetic which attracts visitors from around the world in the summer. Even though you can do a day trip to this island or take a luxurious private boat ride around it, it’s best to stay at least a night or two to explore Capri Town, Anacapri, and everything else this island has to offer. I would advise spending at least 2 nights in Capri.
Cons of staying in Capri
Due to its popularity similar to Positano, this island is very popular for day-trippers. If you arrive in Capri from the main marina, it is very touristy and doesn’t show its beauty at first sight. Once you make your way up to Capri Town via the funicular you will be rewarded with incredible views of the island and the quaint town.

The mountain town of Ravello (1-2 nights)
The village of Ravello makes for a perfect conclusion to an Amalfi Coast/Capri trip. French poet André Gide marveled that Ravello is “nearer to the sky than to the shore.”
Best Places to Stay in Ravello
5 Star Hotels
Caruso a Belmond Hotel • Palazzo Avino • Palazzo Pascal (in Scala near Ravello)
4 Star Hotels
Hotel Villa Fraulo • Hotel Rufolo
Pros of staying in Ravello
Since Ravello is located high in the mountains and a bit off the beaten path, it’s not as busy as Positano or even Amalfi. Weirdly enough the way the roads are built it takes longer to get to Ravello than it does to come back to Amalfi. Even though this town is similar to Positano and Capri in that it experiences more tourists during the day because of day trippers, it’s quiet come evening. I’m glad we visited this town, but you really don’t need more than a night or two here, and some people may see that as a pro! I would advise spending 1-2 nights in Ravello.
Cons of staying in Ravello
As described in the previous paragraph it can be difficult to get to, the bus experience was a nightmare for us, but taxis are extremely expensive. If you attempt to pre-book transport you may find more reasonable rates this way.

The Town of Amalfi (1 night)
Best Places to stay in Amalfi
5 Star Hotels
Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel • Hotel Santa Caterina • Borgo Santandrea • Hotel Miramalfi • Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel and Spa
4 Star Hotels
Hotel Marina Riviera • Hotel Luna Convento
Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel and Spa is technically located in Conca dei Marini close to Amalfi, but is such a stunning property that is extremely highly rated, book now before it sells out!
Pros of staying in Amalfi Town
Amalfi is similar to Positano in that the landscape is stunning and it also has a large marina. From this marina you can catch a ferry to just about anywhere during the day. This would be a great area to stay for at least 1 night on your way to or coming back from Ravello.
Cons of staying in Amalfi Town
Amalfi is not as luxurious as Positano, even though you can find lovely luxury hotel options here too!

Where to Stay on the Amalfi Coast for First-Timers
The best place to stay on the Amalfi Coast if it’s your first time visiting is Positano. Positano has the most beautiful accommodations, a large beach, and even epic hike options. Positano is the most picturesque town on the Amalfi Coast, and in addition to Amalfi, it offers multiple ferry options to other destinations.
What’s the best season to visit the Amalfi Coast?
The best season to visit the Amalfi Coast is the spring or fall. The Amalfi Coast can get incredibly inundated with crowds and day trippers. The spring and fall on the Amalfi Coast bring milder, tolerable temperatures. Keep in mind September is viewed as an extension of summer and can also be very crowded. My husband and I traveled to the Amalfi Coast at the end of September. We encountered crowds during the day on Positano and Capri especially, but hardly at all in the evening. This is because the crowds are usually composed of day trippers.
Best ways to get around on the Amalfi Coast
The best way to get around the Amalfi Coast is by ferry. When visiting the Amalfi Coast it would be best to fly into Rome or Naples and ferry to the Amalfi Coast. There is a small airport in Salerno, but there are limited flights and they operate only on certain days of the week. Once you’ve arrived by ferry in either Capri or any town on the Amalfi Coast, there are multiple companies that offer private, pre-booked taxi transfers.
